Singing is my first LOVE: Vasundhara

Special Person (Interviews)

Vasundhara Das

Nothing makes her happier than singing live. “I perform concerts for a living. And travelling with it is my priority,” says singer-musician and the accidental actor Vasundhara Das. She is on her maiden trip to Chandigarh, to perform at the John Lennon Commemoration Edition 1940 Mont Blanc event at The Taj Chandigarh on December 7, 2010. As graceful as ever, she flashes a warm smile and says, “Aren’t we all Lennon fans, he is one of the most important figures in the history of music of the world.”

Speaking of world, Das takes pride in being a globetrotting musician, absorbing the different genres, styles and forms that have come her way. The Vasundhara Das Band is the latest musical chapter in her life. “It’s my identity and, most of the time, we take music from the films and playbacks I’ve done,” she says. Piecing together this two-year-old band was a task, she adds. People had to be tried and tested, rough edges had to be smoothed, till she finally found the “fantastic four”. “Hemant Divakaran on the guitar, Shalini Mohan on bass guitar, Vijay Subramaniam on drums is the manager too, and Dheerendra Doss is on the keyboards, while I am the vocalist,” says Das about her “tight ship that has set sail”. “Our core strength is versatility, in carrying off a Bollywood set with the same ease as a Lennon number,” she adds.

Among the most striking in her repertoire is Spanish Flamenco music. “Flamenco is the gypsy’s music, a dark art form. Gypsies wander on the fringes of society, and their music struck a note with me for it has a rich ‘Indian-ness’. The fact that gypsies originated in India and travelled to Spain explains the traces of Rajasthani folk and Indian scale in their music,” says Das.

The singer, who walked off with critical acclaim for her role in Mira Nair’s Monsoon Wedding, says she has become choosy about roles. Albums, too, she adds, are a thing of the past. “Everything is online now,” she says. Her main focus is on evolving as a musician. “Rock, country, pop, I can sing a mean country song too,” she says. Although her heart is the happiest where there is music, it’s the many glass ceilings she has to shatter on a daily basis to prove herself that irks Das. “Sometimes people feel I’m too pretty to sing or I’m pretty that’s why I get the opportunity to sing. I hate these clichés,” she says.

Running parallel with this is the Drumjam with Roberto Narain. A five-year-old initiative, this one has a inventory of 20,000 drums and travels across the country, to corporates gatherings and schools. “We let people express themselves through voice and drum, the oldest instruments known to man,” she says. With 75 cities and counting, Vasundhara continues her journey.

The answer was simple. She would follow her heart, and it didn’t take her time to find out what it longed for—music, music and more music. Each time she moved a little away from the heart’s calling, it got her back with more zest and longing.

This time, singer, actor Vasundhara Das returns with a tribute to John Lennon. On the 30th anniversary of John Lennon, Ballantine’s partners with Mont Blanc to launch John Lennon limited edition writing instruments and roped in the singer to do the honours. You bet, Vasundhara jumped on the opportunity. “John Lennon, the musician, has a great impact on me. He is great musician for sure, but he also has the ability to say his mind, and pour everything in the songs,” she holds the pen to be photographed.

Pretty picture she makes, with the pen of course and also with passion—yes it hasn’t changed, it still but strums from music. “This is what I like doing the most, this is what makes my world. Off late, I have been performing with my band on different forms of music and at various places. In fact, I am glad to be playing with a band that can perform on Bollywood music one day and sing to John Lennon the other day,” she smiles.

A musician finally gives some stage to the actor. How about we telling you Vasundhara started her career with Kamal Hassan’s Hey Ram. Not to miss, (you certainly wouldn’t miss it) the song and dance in Moonsoon Wedding. “There comes a stage in life when one has to decide what would give satisfaction. I acted for a while, which was fun and eventually returned to myself. I am not closed to the idea of acting as long as I get to do something nice,” she says.

Any prizes for guessing we return to music? Sukhwinder Singh is his favourite Indian singer, and she loves to perform in a band. Band breaking left right and centre? “Well this again depends on the dedication with which one joins the band, the openness with how one sees things. Last but not the least, it also depends on the attitude with which one approaches something.”

Singing, singing and then someone asks her about writing songs. She sparkles at the query. “I don’t shut myself in a room. It is a natural process; something unexplainable just triggers it. John Lennon would write a song by evening, record it and the dics would be out too, with people listening to it. Writing songs is all about saying your heart, what one feels.” Vasundhara is doing a project called Speak Up, wherein she would pour into songs whatever she feels about. “Whatever bugs me or makes me happy will find place in these songs,” provides the singer who doesn’t mind rinsing her throat for Bollywood numbers.

EMRAAN HASHMI – BACK TO KISSING WITH A BANG IN CROOK

Special Person (Interviews)

THIS TIME THE ACTORS GOES INTERNATIONAL WITH HIS KISSING STREAK, writes MANDEEP PURI…

Emraan Hashmi, better known with the tag of a serial kisser amazed everyone when he didn’t kiss in his last film ‘Once upon a Time in Mumbaai’ and yet it became one of the biggest hits of his career till date. But just after a sabbatical from kissing, Emraan is back to what he does the best and in a more grand fashion as he goes international with his kissing this time. The actor will be seen romancing in the film with a ‘Firang’ (Foreign Girl) and simultaneously Neha Sharma the co-star in his next film ‘Crook– It’s good to be bad’. The movie hit the theatres this month (8th of October) all over.

However his track in the film with the blond girl has some real intimate scenes which are also very much visible in the promos that have been released so far. The Kisser boy is back with a bang and after romancing the Indian girls on screen, it seems that Emraan is now taking it a step further by spicing it up on the celluloid with the foreign actresses too. So can we say that a ‘Brand Kiss’ is what is Hashmi evolving? Well let’s wait and watch…..

“I know that it always raises questions when I am kissing on screen but now I am habitual to facing such questions. It is not that I always want to kiss in every film. If it is the requirement of the script I don’t mind doing it, otherwise I too get apprehensive about it. But in Crook, it was the real need of the hour at that point of the story and screenplay, because it is one of the trigger points which take the story further to another level. People will realize that when they watch the film.” says the actor who has come a long way since his last few super hits like Jannat, Raaz- The Mystery Continues and Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai.

On being asked how his wife reacts to his onscreen image, as Emraan is a married man, blessed with a seven month old baby boy now, Emraan says- “Well I do get slapped around by my wife always after she comes out of the first screenings of my films. Obviously I expect her not to understand but she knows that these are my professional decisions which I have to comply with. Well I am awaiting my quota of slaps after she watches Crook.”

Crook- It’s good to be bad is a Mahesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt’s Vishesh Films production, a banner known vividly for its out of ordinary films and chartbuster music. Their films always had an issue to address but in a typical Bollywood Style. This time it is the issue of Racial Discrimination with the Indians abroad and especially highlighting the recent attacks on Indians in Australia. The film stars Emraan Hashmi and known for giving way to the newcomers in the industry, this time too, Vishesh Films is giving break to a new girl Neha Sharma in this film. The film also casts ‘Fashion’ Boy Arjan Bajwa. Directed by Mohit Suri, the film has all the elements to make it a masses’ film- Romance, Comedy, Action, Thrill and ofcourse an issue, which sums it all. The Music of the film is on Sony Music and has been scored by Music maestro Pritam, whose association with the ‘Bhatts’ has been very fruitful lately with hit albums like Jannat and Tum Mile.

KARAM KARO FAL KI CHINYA MAT KARO is his mantra if life

Special Person (Interviews)

Roshan Sunkaria

raIt gives me pride to introduce a person known as a DEMOLITION MAN, who once gave encroachers in Jalandhar a tough time. The IAS officer of the 1988 batch Dr. Roshan Sunkaria has been serving as the Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh since last two years.

Dr. Sunkaria was the name behind removing all illegal religious structures in Jalandhar, which had been there for over 30 years. Even in the wake of intense opposition and large-scale violence, he had stood his ground. Dr. Sunkaria was the need of the hour in the city where encroachments on public land were seeing a steep rise. In fact, encroachments in certain sectors had put a question mark on the functioning of the civic body.

But since he took the charge of the MC Chief, encroachments in the city blotted to a large extend. Dr. Sunkaria himself feels proud to serve the city Beautiful as the Commissioner of Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh. “Thanks to the vision of our first Prime Minister, Late Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru and the transformation of the same into reality by Le Corbusier, the development in Chandigarh city had been a planned process right from the beginning itself. The city therefore boasts of high quality essential Community and Civic infrastructure”, says Dr. Sunkaria .

The infrastructure is being maintained at its best and for this Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh has been awarded as the best performing city in the country from time to time and the benchmarks it has attained in services like Water Supply, Sewerage, Storm water Drainage and Solid Waste Management are enviable throughout the country. A well maintained large number of Gardens and Green Belts act not only as lungs to the city but also add to the beauty of the city.

With the growing population and coming up of adjoining cities, the pressure on the Community and Civic Infrastructure is increasing day by day with the result that sustaining the higher service level of benchmarks is a challenge for which MC is adequately gearing for. Citizens’ cooperation is solicited in keeping the city clean, maintaining green belts, conserving water and free from encroachments, construction waste (malba) and other nuisance.

With a tough and a hectic routine throughout, what makes Dr. Sunkaria an active man? I always drive pleasure from work and if you love and enjoy your work, it is no longer a pain for you. SWIMMING is one thing which really de-stress me. A couple of minutes under water make me on back my toes again. Moreover, playing GOLF during weekends is a real stress buster. A Municipal Commissioner is always among people. How do you protect yourself from the communicable deceases which are on a rise these days? In India, 90 per cent of the deceases are communicable, which can easily be prevented. I am a doctor, and know the dos and don’ts to prevent these communicable deceases.

By just following a health diet and some preventive measure, you can easily remain safe and restrain yourself from such deceases. Serving as he Chief of the Municipal Corporation, how do you see the city beautiful in years to come? Sanitation is the most important aspect for a city, which along with Waste Management and Water Waste results in the success or failure of that city. Chandigarh is one of the most planned cities, which has excellent infrastructure, clean and green environment, good sanitation and of course fresh air to breathe. All these qualities increases the life span of the people living and thus making the life better as compare to the other cities.

What all expansions have taken place as far as well being of the residents is concerned? We are constructed 45 greens belts, apart from the walker areas in almost all the sectors. The greenery is around 37 per cent, which is highest as compare to other cities. What are the Dos and Don’ts that Dr. Sunkaria follows? I am not a fussy person but yes I follow certain dos and don’ts to stay fit and healthy. Regular diet, physical activities, preventive measures are some dos that I follow, while lesser in take of salt, oil and sugar are things which I avoid.

What helps Dr. Sunkaria to remain active? I was a patient of hyper tension in early days of my carrier in the year 1994. But soon I realised that one need to change the attitude towards life, which is not a cup of tea for every individual. I feel a combination of “change of attitude towards life, regular good diet and physical activities” certainly helps to stay calm and active. An advice from Dr. Sunkaria for the people: Keep a good smile, help others, stay calm, have a good approach towards life are some tips that I follow.

I am a firm believer of KARAM KARO FAL KI CHINYA MAT KARO. One should look down and thanks God for whatever they have. But most important have a good diet, and ofcourse some physical exercise. Stay Healthy…
